Our Story

Stage 1 of PowerSeraya’s first power station in Jurong was completed – firing up Singapore’s drive for economic expansion and technology. Jurong’s four 60MW steam turbines were commissioned and it helped the then Singapore Public Utilities Board provide electricity for Singapore’s burgeoning factories.

Stage 2 of Jurong Power Station was completed with three new 120MW steam turbines. It served Singapore well through its peak hour demand even through the 80s.

Pulau Seraya Power Station Stage 1 development marked the birth of Singapore’s first offshore power station. Three 250MW generating steam plants completed Stage 1.

Pulau Seraya Power Station Stage 2 was completed.

Public Utilities Board’s Electricity Department became a corporation, Singapore Power. PowerSeraya became a subsidiary.

PowerSeraya diversified into oil storage through Oiltanking Seraya Pte Ltd as a joint venture.

PowerSeraya’s Pulau Seraya Power Station at Jurong Island was fully completed.

Ownership of PowerSeraya was transferred to Temasek Holdings (Pte) Ltd. Seraya Energy Pte Ltd was formed and granted license as a private electricity retailer.

PowerSeraya’s new Combined Cycle Power plant (CCPP) was completed and boosted total licenced capacity to 3100MW.

S$200 million agreement was signed with IHI Japan to convert three units of 250 MW steam plants to run on Orimulsion®/ Heavy Fuel Oil. PowerSeraya was certified ISO 9001: 2000 compliant.

Signing of the 2004- 2007 Collective Agreement with the Union of Power and Gas Employees put in place major work place reforms which included a new asset-based team structure, introduction of 12-hour shifts and a performance-based wage system.

ISO 9001:2000 was extended to cover the operation and maintenance of PowerSeraya’s two units of 370MW CCPP.

Conversion of the three units of steam plants in Stage 1 to run on Orimulsion®/ Heavy Fuel Oil was fully completed.

PowerSeraya implemented an Environmental Management System and was certified ISO 14001 compliant.

Seraya Energy won Regional New Call Centre of the Year (Gold) and Singapore New Call Centre (Silver) awards.

PowerSeraya made a strategic investment in water production to become self-sufficient in its water needs.

Seraya Energy was ranked Singapore’s 3rd Fastest Growing Company. The Fastest Growing 50 (FG50) Certification confers recognition in outstanding achievement for continuous and sustained corporate growth based on the company’s three-year compounded annual growth rate in turnover.

New physical oil trading subsidiary, PetroSeraya Pte Ltd was established on 2 April 2007 to strengthen fuel security while providing options to increase revenue stream to include bunkering, water supply or cargo trading.

On 22 August 2007, the PowerSeraya Group announced plans to invest in a new 800MW natural gas-fired Co-Generation Combined Cycle Power Plant to be completed by 2009/2010. The project undertaken by the Siemens-Samsung Consortium will deliver ultra high pressure steam to drive critical chemical processes for customers’ operations on Jurong Island.

The Official Opening of PowerSeraya’s 10,000m3/day Seawater Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plant on 29 January 2008 marked the installation of the world’s first to use the highly advanced 16-inch large diameter membrane technology. With this desalination plant, PowerSeraya is able to become self-sufficient in its water needs while creating a Combined Heat, Water and Power platform for future growth.

PetroSeraya was awarded with International Enterprise Singapore’s Global Trader Award.

PowerSeraya’s Oil Testing Laboratory was successfully accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for its technical competence in carrying out tests and calibrations.

As part of the liberalisation of the power generation industry in Singapore, the PowerSeraya Group was divested from Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited to YTL Power International Berhad on 6 March 2009.

PowerSeraya’s 800MW natural gas-fired Co-Generation Combined Cycle Plant was officially opened on 20 October 2010. The completion of the plant further sealed the position of PowerSeraya as a leading integrated energy company in Singapore to provide efficient and reliable multi-utility services.

PowerSeraya became the first power generation company to export electricity to Malaysia’s national power producer, Tenaga Nasional, marking the first commercial deal for cross-border sale of electricity between Singapore and Malaysia.

The company’s laboratory became a full-fledged testing centre to conduct both oil and water testing services after it was accredited with ISO/IEC17025:2005 SAC-SINGLAS in June 2011. It also made PowerSeraya the first power generation company to be accredited in fuel oil and desalination water listed on the SAC-SINGLAS directory.

As of 1 April 2012, the company became officially known as YTL PowerSeraya Pte. Limited after it underwent a corporate restructuring exercise which saw PowerSeraya Limited transfer its assets and businesses to its existing holding company. The corporate restructuring was to allow for better utilisation of capital and more efficient movement of funds.

YTL PowerSeraya received its first regasified gas in April, which is to be used for power generation. It signaled the start of a new supply source of fuel for the company. At the same time, it opened news doors of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-related opportunities for the company’s business portfolio.

Seraya Energy raised the customer service bar and clinched Gold award for ‘Best Contact Centre’ in September 2014, a significant boost from the Bronze award it received in 2012. It also received the Silver award for ‘Best Contact Centre Manager’.

The following month in October, the retail arm received recognition in Beijing as ‘Best Call Centre’ from the Asia Pacific Contact Centre Association Leaders.

PetroSeraya, the Group’s physical oil trading and tank leasing arm, completed its plan on schedule to upgrade its fuel oil storage tanks and expand its jetty terminal. This further enhanced its capability to meet customers’ fuel oil storage needs as well as accommodate various vessels and oil tankers.

YTL PowerSeraya collaborated with Waterways Watch Society to launch PLAY (Punggol Learning Adventure for Youths) in February 2015, a three-year educational project which aims to raise youth’s awareness and knowledge of water issues on both a global and local level.

In August 2015, the Group became a signatory to the United Nations (UN) Global Compact’s 10 universally accepted principles which cover human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

YTL PowerSeraya became a founding member of the Singapore chapter of the World Energy Council, which was launched in November 2016. The company’s participation in the United Nations-accredited body is an extension of its on-going efforts to develop a more sustainable energy future for Singapore.

Geneco, a brand of YTL PowerSeraya, was launched in response to the liberalisation of the Singapore residential consumer electricity market.

Geneco reaches its milestone of powering more than 100K homes in Singapore​ within a year of its launch.

Geneco launched the Power Eco Add-on 1.0, Singapore’s first-and-only green add-on for electricity plan.

Together with parent company YTL Power International Berhad, we completed the acquisition of Tuaspring Power Station in Singapore under our wholly owned subsidiary Taser Power Pte Ltd. Tuaspring’s 396 MW combined cycle power station complements YTL PowerSeraya’s existing power generation assets on Jurong Island and will create significant synergies across the Group’s portfolio of utility businesses to pursue greater growth.

Energy Market Authority announced Geneco as Singapore’s No.1 Residential Electricity Retailer with over 160,000 homes.

Launch of ChargEco, electric vehicle (EV) charging service provider, YTL PowerSeraya’s joint venture with Strides Mobility, cementing our commitment to contribute to an overall national goal of 60,000 EV charging points by 2030.

Geneco launched Power Eco Add-on 2.0 to extend to existing customers.

YTL PowerSeraya broke ground for its 600MW Hydrogen-Ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) – the first project to be won under EMA’s new Centralised Process framework, and will be completed by December 2027. The S$800 million 600MW CCGT is designed to be up to 30% hydrogen-ready, and can be retrofitted to 100%.

To commemorate SG60 and YTL Beyond 70, YTL PowerSeraya collaborated with Mandai Wildlife Group by being the Official Partner for their Adopt An Animal Programme.

YTL PowerSeraya completed the construction of the additional ~4MWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System, which cost over S$5 million, at our Pulau Seraya Power Station, bringing our PV System capacity to a total of ~5MWp. The increased capacity, which can produce a monthly average of 417MWh under optimal conditions, will be able to support more than 1,000 four-room flats.
